The Pantín Classic is an international surfing championship held on Pantín beach, in the municipality of Valdoviño, since 1988, always in late summer. It is Spain's oldest surfing event and the fourth oldest in the world, after those of Bells Beach, Virginia Beach and Lacanau. It was born in 1987 on the initiative of a group of enthusiasts who founded the Océano Surf Club, Galicia's first surf club, and chose Pantín because it was an open, almost untouched beach, far from property speculation. Its Atlantic-swell waves made it a fixed date on the international circuit and have turned this coastal village into the concello's biggest sporting event. Since 2008 it has been organised by the Club Praia de Pantín, and in 2016 it was declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Galicia (Festival of Tourist Interest of Galicia).
