What to see and do in Moeche

Moeche
Village
Moeche is a municipality of about 1,200 inhabitants in the province of A Coruña, in the comarca of Ferrol, whose name comes from the Latin villa Modesti, in honour of a former owner named Modesto; its residents are known by the demonym modestinos. The municipality's earliest remains date from the Bronze Age, found at Santa Cruz and at the castro of Labacengos. The best-known episode in its history is the assault of 1431, when the irmandiños rose up against Nuno Freire de Andrade, «o Mao», and, unable to find him, tore down his castle; rebuilt in the 16th century by the count of Lemos, it later served as a prison. Its eighteen-metre keep, and the Festa Irmandiña, which re-enacts that assault with torches every August since 1980, recall that episode today.
Castle of Moeche
Monument
Fifteenth-century fortress linked to the Andrade family, of irregular polygonal enclosure and with a keep of square plan and eighteen metres in height; it was demolished by the Irmandiños in 1431 during the revolt against Nuno Freire de Andrade, o Mao, and remade in the sixteenth century. It is the symbol of the concello and the setting of its great festival.
Irmandiño Festival of Moeche
Activity
Festival held every August since 1980 at the foot of the castle, commemorating the Irmandiño revolt of 1431 with concerts, a communal meal and a night assault on the fortress re-enacted with torches and fireworks.
The Irmandiño revolt against Nuno Freire de Andrade
Historical milestone
The first great Galician peasant brotherhood rose against Nuno Freire de Andrade, o Mao, and laid siege to his castle of Moeche. That revolt anticipated by more than thirty years the great irmandade of 1467.
