What to see and do in Fene

Fene
Village
Fene is a municipality of the province of La Coruña, on the ria of Ferrol, whose main economic activity in the second half of the 20th century was shipbuilding at the Astano shipyard, founded in 1941 and grown to become one of the largest in Europe with its oil tankers; today its facilities, belonging to Navantia Seanergies, build platforms for offshore wind farms. It preserves a medieval bridge over the Belelle river and the town hall, designed in 1975 by Alberto Campo Baeza, winner of the National Architecture Prize. It houses the Museo do Humor, opened in 1984 by cartoonist Xaquín Marín, and displays indiano architecture such as the Casa de la Maleta, in Barallobre. In its fragas of the Belelle and on the beaches of the ria of Ares it preserves natural sites of interest. It has about 12,500 inhabitants.
Mount Marraxón
Nature
A 395-metre summit in the parish of Sillobre and the highest point of the municipality, from which the ría de Ferrol, the ría de Ares and the shipyards are taken in at a single glance; its slopes drop towards the wooded valley of the River Belelle.
Museum of o Humor de Fene
Monument
A museum devoted to graphic humour created in 1984 at the initiative of the Ferrol cartoonist Xaquín Marín, bringing together originals by Galician and international humorists; a museum rarity in a municipality shaped by shipyards.
Town Hall of Fene
Curiosity
A town hall designed by Alberto Campo Baeza, who won with it the first prize in a national competition called in 1977; it was built in 1980 and is one of the architect's early works, he being the National Architecture Prize winner of 2020.
The waterfall of the Belelle
Nature
A spectacular fall of the river Belelle in a valley that preserves well-structured Atlantic woodland, proposed as a site of Community importance. The same river crosses the concello beneath a bridge of medieval origin.
The indiano architecture of Fene
Curiosity
Houses of the beginning of the 20th century raised by emigrants returned from America, with galleries, palm trees and finishes of overseas taste. They dot the parishes of the concello and contrast with the industrial landscape of the estuary.
The founding of ASTANO
Historical milestone
The shipyard born in 1941 on the shore of Perlío came to be one of the largest in Europe and made Fene one of the most populous concellos of Ferrolterra. The naval restructuring of the eighties partly dismantled it.
