Lagoon of a Frouxeira Nature · Valdoviño, Ferrol, A Coruña Coastal lagoon at the foot of the Frouxeira beach, in the parish of Lago -which it gives its name to-, separated from the sea by a sandbar or dune cordon; it is the most important coastal wetland in the north of the province of A Coruña. Listed in July 1993 on the Ramsar Convention list of wetlands of international importance for its ornithological value as a wintering and breeding area for thousands of birds, mostly migratory, it is also designated a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance of the Costa Ártabra. Every year the Xunta de Galicia opens the channel linking the lagoon to the ocean to prevent flooding in nearby homes. Photo: Xoanseoane (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Valdoviño
