What to see and do in Narón

Narón
Village
Narón is a municipality of A Coruña, in the comarca of Ferrol, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the ria of Ferrol, in the valley of the mouth of the Jubia river; with about 39,000 inhabitants, it is the eighth most populated municipality in Galicia and the fourth in its province. Its name is a pre-Roman hydronym related to other rivers of Paleo-European root, such as the Neira, a tributary of the Miño, or the Asturian Narcea. The AP-9 crosses its urban centre and connects with the Río do Pozo business park, one of the largest industrial estates in Galicia. It preserves the monastery of San Martiño de Xuvia, from the 12th century, alongside castros and mámoas, with beaches such as El Casal, where there are remains of a castro.
Monastery of San Martiño de Xuvia
Monument
A Romanesque church of 1137 promoted by the Count of Traba on the remains of a 10th-century monastery: basilical in plan with three naves and semicircular apses, with the 15th-century Gothic tomb of Rodrigo Esquío. It is a declared Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931).
Mount of o Nenos
Nature
A 367-metre-high hill inland from the municipality, dotted with Bronze Age burial mounds; from its summit one looks out over the Ría de Ferrol and the valley of the Río Grande de Xuvia, which separates Narón from Neda. It is the highest point in the municipality of Narón, in the parish of Sedes, and several rivers rise there that feed the Encoro das Forcadas reservoir and the Lagoa da Frouxeira. On its summit, a group of sixteen burial mounds known as Os Montiños da Moura lines the path of the route to Santo André de Teixido. The hill today combines farming and livestock operations, pine and eucalyptus forestry plantations, and a wind farm installed in recent years on its summit, alongside telecommunications antennas.
Pena Molexa
Curiosity
A large granite rock standing alone in a meadow in the parish of O Val, around which the oral tradition of Ferrolterra weaves legends of mouras (fairy-like spirits) and pre-Christian cults; today it is one of the draws of the municipality's legend-based tourism. It is an unusual megalithic monument: a stone disc about five metres in diameter, carved into a circular shape and resting -not buried- on a group of large blocks by means of a wedge-and-lever system. Its original function remains uncertain, though it is usually linked to the ancient rite of the Barque of the Sun and Moon, popular among European peoples before Romanisation. To date no archaeological work has been carried out on the monument, only ethnological studies and visual observations.
The Pena Molexa
Nature
A Pena Molexa is a granite formation of unusual appearance in the parish of Vilasuso, in Narón, held by popular tradition to be a boulder laden with legends, although ethnological studies consider it one of the most singular megalithic monuments in Europe: a disc about five metres in diameter, balanced on a group of large stones by means of a wedge-and-lever system, with the contact surfaces fitted together like a key and lock. It is linked to the vanished rite of the Barge of the Sun and the Moon. No archaeological excavation has been carried out on it, and the precision of its stones makes it unlikely to be a simple eroded natural formation. It rises on a hill dotted with mámoas and castros.
The founding of the priory of San Martiño de Xuvia
Historical milestone
In 1137 the count of Traba placed the house of San Martiño de Xuvia, beside the mouth of the river, within the Cluniac orbit. Its Romanesque church is still standing and is the most notable medieval monument of the concello.
The Thirteenth Fair of Sedes
Food and drink
The Feira do Trece is held on the thirteenth of every month in the parish of Sedes, in the concello of Narón, on what is the last traditional fairground kept by the municipality, where, besides this market of local produce, livestock and open-air food, other events also take place, such as the horse fair or the hunting-dog fair. On 13 March 1918, coinciding with market day, the so-called Revolta das Pedradas took place in front of the mayor's shop, a local protest against the unequal distribution of consumption levies and the disproportionate taxes borne by the peasants; the Guardia Civil came to disperse it and left six dead and several wounded, events denounced by the magazine Nós. It is one of the most deeply rooted traditional fairs of Ferrolterra.
