What to see and do in Villar del Arzobispo

Villar del Arzobispo
Village
Villar del Arzobispo is the most populous municipality in the comarca of Los Serranos, in the province of Valencia, with remains of Roman baths and a necropolis, on the left bank of the Turia river, on a vineyard plain rising toward the sierra de Andilla. The oldest settlements in the municipal area, from the Bronze Age, are found at the Puntal de Cambra and the Cerro de las Cabras, followed by Iberian settlements from the 4th century BC. The origin of the present-day town goes back to a Muslim alquería next to the tower of Benaduf; conquered in 1236, it passed in 1300 to the archbishopric of Valencia, which resettled it with Christians in 1324, and it received the title of royal town in 1795, when it had 2,250 inhabitants. Today it has 3,862 inhabitants (INE 2025).

On the tower, of square plan, four Gothic sandstone gargoyles can be seen, along with the clock's bell-gable, added in 1906.
Archbishop's Palace of Villar del Arzobispo
Monument
The Archbishop's Palace of Villar del Arzobispo, in Gothic-Renaissance style, was built between the 14th and 17th centuries as the summer residence of the archbishops of Valencia; it served this purpose until Mendizábal's disentailment in the 19th century, when it passed into civil hands. It preserves a monumental staircase with gravestones from a Roman cemetery embedded in the wall, and a doorway with the coat of arms of the House of Austria carved in black stone from Alcublas. Of the original complex, only the noble part of the building remains standing.
