What to see and do in Calles

Calles
Village
Calles is a municipality of Los Serranos, in Valencia, built on a plain on the right bank of the Tuéjar river, around the church of the Purísima Concepción, in a mountainous municipal area also crossed by the Turia river, which runs boxed in between rock walls in the La Cerrada area. It has 465 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is Spanish-speaking. It has a singular enclave, Alcotas, whose houses belong to Calles while the surrounding land belongs to neighboring Chelva. Its municipal area preserves the Peña Cortada aqueduct, a Roman work built to supply water to Sagunto, and Iberian remains have been found in places such as the Prado de Llantas. Its forested area, of pines and holm oaks, alternates with pastures, and the Morisco quarter of la Petrosa recalls another chapter of its history.
Aqueduct of Peña Cortada
Monument
The Roman aqueduct of Peña Cortada, also called the aqueduct of La Serrada or La Serranía, runs through the municipalities of Tuéjar, Chelva, Calles and Domeño, in the province of Valencia, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2004. It is estimated to have extended some 98.6 kilometres between La Serranía and Sagunto or Valencia, making it the longest Roman aqueduct on the peninsula, although only 28.6 kilometres of remains are preserved. It combines stretches of bridge and channel cut into rock; in Calles stands one of its most spectacular elements, the three-arch bridge over the barranco de la Cueva del Gato, 36 metres long and more than 18 metres high, after which the conduit crosses the almost vertical cliff face that gives the whole complex its name, Peña Cortada.
