What to see and do in Alcublas

Alcublas
Village
Alcublas is a municipality of the Valencian Community, in the province of Valencia and the comarca of Los Serranos, situated on the southern slope of the mountainous area between the sierra Calderona and the sierra de Andilla, which separates the basins of the Turia and the Palancia. Its municipal area, of hollows and plains surrounded by hills, combines pine forests in the south with pastures and scrubland. It has 710 inhabitants. Its place name, of Muslim origin, suggests an Andalusi foundation linked to the taifa of Alpuente, although the first documentary reference dates from 1257, when James I gave the town to Teresa Gil de Vidaure. It preserves its old windmills, restored, as a testament to its agricultural past, and celebrates its patronal festivities in honor of San Antonio Abad, patron of the parish, and of the Virgen del Rosario.
Church of San Antonio Abad de Alcublas
Monument
The parish church of San Antonio Abad, on the Plaza de la Iglesia and Plaza de Florentina Mañes in Alcublas (Los Serranos, Valencia), occupies the town's original centre, although the current building only dates back to the 17th century. A fire in 1917 destroyed part of the roof, the main altarpiece, the organ, the choir and the side altars, and its effects caused the collapse of the bell tower in 1946, requiring successive reconstruction works. It is a single-nave building with an octagonal dome and rubblework walls reinforced with ashlar. Among its holdings, the 17th-century sculpture of San Antonio Abad and the 13th-century parish cross stand out, the latter made in silver and gold by the Valencian silversmith Eloy Camañes. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a heritage protection category at local level).
Windmills of Alcublas
Monument
The old windmills of Alcublas, restored and a testimony to the agricultural past of the Los Serranos region, were formerly used to grind grain. They stand on a mountain 904 metres high on the outskirts of the village, offering a wide panoramic view over the town.
Festivities of San Antonio Abad y la Virgen del Rosario de Alcublas
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Alcublas (Los Serranos, Valencia) in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot and Our Lady of the Rosary include, among other events, those for Saint Anthony the Abbot, held on 17 January over four days: the first, with bonfires at every house -burning gorse- and the large bonfire in the church square followed by hot chocolate; the second, dedicated to San Antón, with the blessing of animals; the third, dedicated to the Cristo; and the fourth, with races in which the young people of the village compete to win a chicken and the children sweets.
