Higueruelas
Village
Higueruelas is one of the smallest municipalities of Los Serranos, with 567 inhabitants, built on the slope of a mountain, a spur of the Peñas de Dios, on land always above 600 meters. It began as a masía so named for the fig trees around it, first mentioned around 1550; hemmed in among mountains and hard to reach, it served as a refuge for outlaws. It belonged to Chelva and to the manors of Jaime de Jérica, Vilanova and the Duke of Villahermosa, until in 1825 a royal decree of Ferdinand VII made it an independent municipality. Its 17th-century church of Santa Bárbara, rectangular in plan with a single nave, preserves a Baroque altarpiece. Its most characteristic festival is San Antón, from 14 to 20 January, with bonfires throughout the village.
