What to see and do in Domeño

Domeño
Village
Domeño is a municipality of Los Serranos, in the interior of Valencia, whose population was moved several kilometers to the east, near Liria and Casinos, between 1954 and 1981 because of the construction of the Loriguilla reservoir, which left two separate settlements, Domeño Viejo and Domeño Nuevo. Domeño Viejo lies on the shore of the reservoir's headwaters; the municipal area, very mountainous, is crossed by the Turia river, joined near the old settlement by the Tuéjar river. It has 723 inhabitants and is Spanish-speaking. Flints from a possible Epipaleolithic period have been found in the Tormé cave and Bronze Age remains at the Puntal de los Valientes. Next to the old site stands the castle of Muslim origin, with a walled precinct reinforced by towers, restored in 1839 during the Carlist War.

Reservoir of Loriguilla en Domeño
Nature
The Loriguilla reservoir was built in 1979 over the bed of the Turia river, in the municipality of Domeño (Los Serranos, Valencia). Its filling flooded close to 1,776 hectares of irrigated orchards and mills and affected some 250 families, burying the original town centre, Domeño Viejo. Its residents had to move several kilometres to the east to found Domeño Nuevo, already inhabited by 1981. The reservoir today dominates the municipality's landscape over the site of the former village.
Domeño Viejo y Domeño Nuevo
Curiosity
Domeño was relocated between 1954 and 1981 due to the construction of the Loriguilla reservoir, giving rise to two separate settlements: Domeño Viejo and Domeño Nuevo. The first expropriation notices arrived in 1962 and in 1966 the Government approved the total displacement of the population; the agreement for the acquisition of land was signed in 1970 and the last relocations were completed between 1978 and 1981. In total 250 families were affected and 1,776 fanegadas (147.58 hectares) were flooded. The new population settled at the masía del Carril, in the municipality of Liria, which eventually became the new Domeño.
Patron Saint Festivities of Domeño
Activity
Festivities of Domeño in honour of San Isidro, Santa Catalina and the Holy Cross, held on 1, 2 and 3 May. In the old town centre the patron saint had been San Roque; after the population was relocated, San Isidro was adopted, in keeping with the residents who came from the Masía del Carril. Santa Catalina, moreover, is honoured as patroness on 25 November.
