What to see and do in Benissanó

Benissanó
Village
Benissanó is a municipality of El Camp de Túria, southeast of Llíria, at 70 metres of altitude, whose Arabic-Berber-rooted name refers to the tribe of the Bannu Zannun. It arose in the 12th century around a small Muslim castle, and in 1249 the Llibre del Repartiment records the grant of the alquería to Pedro Íñiguez de DiCastello; James I recognised its own jurisdiction. In the late 15th century Isabel Gallach acquired the lordship, inherited in 1503 by her son Luis de Cabanilles, first lord of Benisanó; in the castle-palace, built in the second half of the 15th century on that earlier Arab settlement, the governor took refuge in 1519 from the plague of Valencia and, between 1520 and 1521, from the Germanies revolt. The castle was declared a Monument in 1994. It today has 2,449 inhabitants.
Castle-palace of Benissanó
Monument
The castle-palace of Benissanó, where, according to tradition, King Francis I of France was taken prisoner after the Battle of Pavia, was built in the second half of the 15th century and originally had a drawbridge and moat. It is one of the best-preserved castles in the Comunitat Valenciana, and can be toured inside: its rooms and terraces transport the visitor back to medieval times.
Parish Church of the Holy Kings of Benissanó
Monument
Church located next to the castle of Benissanó, which preserves paintings from the 15th to the 17th centuries, some attributed to the Renaissance painter Juan de Juanes. The original temple was built in the second half of the 15th century at the instigation of the Cavanillas and Villarrasa families, lords of Benisanó, with a main Gothic nave and two side aisles covered with Mudejar coffered ceilings. Among its works it preserves a 15th-century Adoración de los Reyes by Paolo de San Leocadio, an image of a Nazarene attributed to Juan de Juanes and a 17th-century Virgen de los Desamparados. Damaged in the Civil War, it was restored in 1945 and again in 1983, and in 1992 a new neo-Gothic building was consecrated; it has venerated the Virgen del Fundamento, patroness of Benisanó, since 1699.
Medieval walls of Benissanó
Monument
The remains of the medieval wall of Benissanó, which still preserve old stone gates known as the Bétera, Llíria and Valencia gates, the historic ways into the town.
The grant of the alquería of Benissanó
Historical milestone
James I handed the Andalusi farmstead to Pedro Íñiguez de Dicastello, the origin of the lordship that in 1503 would be inherited by Luis de Cabanilles, builder of the castle-palace that still presides over the old quarter.
The tray cake
