What to see and do in Torás

Torás
Village
Torás is a mountain municipality in the Alto Palancia, in the province of Castellón, located at 773 metres above sea level, in the centre of the cirque formed by the sierra de Pina, Javalambre and the sierra de Andilla. Its origin lies in a Muslim alquería, and its name comes from “torada”, a place of passage and pasture for bulls. During the First Carlist War, the Isabelline general Azpiroz settled in Torás to besiege the neighbouring Bejís for five months until its surrender in 1840; in March 1843 Torás became administratively independent from Bejís, on which it had depended since the Reconquest. Nearly a third of its municipal area is forest of pines, junipers and holm oaks, and the Palancia river flows through the south, with trout and barbel. It has 271 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Nature
The forest landscape of Torás, in the Alto Palancia (Castellón), covers almost a third of the municipal territory, with pines, junipers and holm oaks as the most abundant species, in areas such as La Hoya Elvira, El Agua Mala, El Sabinar, La Cañadilla, El Bolaje and Los Arenales. Specimens of Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea) also grow there, now scarce in the area, and, at the head of the ravines, common elms together with some of the last native white and black poplars in the Comunitat Valenciana. The municipality reaches its highest altitudes at Monte Alto del Navajo, at 1104 metres, and at Alto del Pepino, its highest point, at 1136 metres.
