What to see and do in Palomar el

El Palomar
Village
El Palomar is one of the smallest municipalities of La Vall d'Albaida, in Valencia, at 313 metres altitude among orchards irrigated by the barranco de la Junda and the Font de Sis, with an exclave in the Sierra de Benicadell. It was founded in the 13th century, after the conquest of James I, by Aragonese farmers and herders who Valencianised the Muslim name of the place, al Palombar; repopulation was slow, with an abandonment of land around 1276-1277 due to the Saracen revolt, resolved with new grants from 1278 onward. It preserves a Baroque church from the 18th century built over a medieval temple, with a parish museum of sculpture, goldwork and religious painting. Its festivities for the Virgen de los Desamparados have as their central event the Plantà del Xop, the planting of a black poplar accompanied by the distribution of cooked broad beans.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol
Monument
Parish church of El Palomar (La Vall d'Albaida, Valencia), built in the 17th century on an earlier medieval temple, although its present appearance, in Baroque style, is the result of an 18th-century renovation. It preserves several chapels dedicated to Saint Peter, the Virgen de los Dolores, the Holy Sepulchre and the Virgen del Carmen, as well as a high altarpiece of Baroque inspiration dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle, with paintings arranged in a circle around a central sculpture. Beside the church stands a bell tower with three bells: the Marianna, that of the Holy Family and that of Saint Peter. The parish also holds a small museum of sculpture, goldwork and religious painting.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Rosario
Monument
The hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario of El Palomar (La Vall d'Albaida), and the calvary erected beside it on the ruins of an earlier medieval hermitage, form an ensemble of rural Valencian architecture of simple appearance: a single nave divided into three bays articulated by pillars. The present building, from the 19th century, did not always have a religious use: in its early years it served as the meeting hall of the town council and as the village's first school. Today it is surrounded by a landscaped area and forms part, together with the calvary, of the Stations of the Cross of the municipality.
Festivities of el Xop
Activity
Festival in honour of the Virgen de los Desamparados whose central act is the Plantà del Xop, the ritual raising of a black poplar, a long-standing ethnographic ceremony accompanied by a distribution of boiled broad beans.
