What to see and do in Bèlgida

Bèlgida
Village
Bèlgida is a municipality of La Vall d'Albaida, in Valencia, with 651 inhabitants, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Benicadell, whose ridge —with the Alto Redó, at 994 metres— borders Alicante; it is crossed by the río de la Mata, a tributary of the Micena. Its origin is probably Iberian, and in 1250 James I brought it under Christian rule; from the 14th century it formed part of the barony of the Bellvís family, who, after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, repopulated the place with 65 Christian settlers who accepted the settlement charter of 1611, and whose palace's castle tower is still preserved. Its church, dedicated to San Lorenzo, holds canvases by Espinosa and Orrente and frescoes from the 16th-17th centuries. Next to the hermitage of the Calvari, from 1724, it has that of San Antonio Abad, and takes part in the Cant de la Carxofa.
