El Palomar Village · Palomar el, La Vall d'Albaida, Valencia El Palomar is one of the smallest municipalities of La Vall d'Albaida, in Valencia, at 313 metres altitude among orchards irrigated by the barranco de la Junda and the Font de Sis, with an exclave in the Sierra de Benicadell. It was founded in the 13th century, after the conquest of James I, by Aragonese farmers and herders who Valencianised the Muslim name of the place, al Palombar; repopulation was slow, with an abandonment of land around 1276-1277 due to the Saracen revolt, resolved with new grants from 1278 onward. It preserves a Baroque church from the 18th century built over a medieval temple, with a parish museum of sculpture, goldwork and religious painting. Its festivities for the Virgen de los Desamparados have as their central event the Plantà del Xop, the planting of a black poplar accompanied by the distribution of cooked broad beans.
