What to see and do in Montaverner

Montaverner
Village
Montaverner is a municipality in La Vall d'Albaida, in the province of Valencia, with 1,624 inhabitants, situated on the banks of the Clariano and Albaida rivers, which meet next to the fuente dels Quatre Xorros; nearby, the Bellús reservoir dams the waters of the Albaida. The village was born in 1270, when James I decided to found a settlement here to secure the road between Valencia and Alicante, granting the Carta Puebla on 26 August 1271 to settlers from Barcelona, who had to leave after the revolt of Al-Azraq in 1276. The expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 reduced the village from sixty to thirty houses. Its parish church, dedicated to San Juan y San Jaime Apóstol, was built in the 18th century on top of an old Almohad tower and the original Gothic parish church of Santiago Apóstol.

Monument
Parish church of Saint John and Saint James the Apostle of Montaverner (La Vall d'Albaida, Valencia), built in the 18th century over an old Almohad tower and the original Gothic parish of Saint James the Apostle. Neoclassical in style, it was erected between 1735 and 1758 on the initiative of the parish priest Dr. Esplugues, and its bell tower was built between 1758 and 1762; it has, embedded in it, a Roman column and a capital bearing the bars of Aragon. It houses the chapel of the Immaculate Conception from the early 18th century, a neo-Byzantine baptismal font from 1909, eighteenth-century paintings and an eighteenth-century monstrance, as well as images of the Cristo de la Paciencia and Saint Blaise by Galarza and an Our Lady of Loreto from 1995.
Patron Saint Festivities of Montaverner
Activity
Montaverner's patron saint festivities are held in the second half of August, with the transfer of the patroness from the ermita de Colata to the parish church. The first day is dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, the second to the Cristo de la Paciencia and the third to the Holy Patrons, and they are rounded off with parades of Moors and Christians, the presentation of the festival queen and her court of honor, and events such as the nit de l'olla, l'entrà and la retreta, in which the comparsas parade through the village.
