Carrícola
Village
Carrícola is a municipality of La Vall d'Albaida, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Benicadell, on mountainous terrain reaching 812 metres at the Alto de la Fontfreda. It originates in a Muslim hamlet that James I granted in 1270 together with the Castellet tower, and which in 1273 passed to the Bishop of Valencia; in 1477 it was established as a barony attached by Cardinal Lluís Joan del Milà i Borja. It was a Morisco settlement, with 56 houses before their expulsion. It lives from dry farming of almond, carob and olive trees, and has been a pioneer in organic farming and rural tourism. It preserves the castle of Carrícola, of Arab origin, restored and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), at more than 400 metres altitude, as well as the church of San Miguel Arcángel. It has 97 inhabitants.
