What to see and do in Guadasséquies

Guadasséquies
Village
Guadasséquies, also known as Vorasséquies, is a municipality of La Vall d'Albaida situated on the banks of the Albaida river, whose name comes from the Islamic hamlet of Wad as-Sákkar, "the river of the drunkards". Populated by Moriscos until their expulsion in 1609, when some thirty families left, it was repopulated by Christians from Xàtiva -23 households in 1646- and grew slowly to the 385 inhabitants of 1940. It became an independent municipality in 1833, having previously belonged to Xàtiva. Its economy combines industry, with chemical, plastics and textile estates, and irrigated agriculture along the Albaida. Its hermitage, next to a fountain, is a landmark on the Ruta dels Quatre Pobles, which links it to Alfarrasí, Benissuera and Sempere.
Hermitage of Guadasséquies
Monument
The hermitage of the Cristo del Amparo stands on a small hill on the outskirts of Guadasséquies, facing towards Sempere, next to a fountain and a landmark on the Ruta dels Quatre Pobles that links Alfarrasí, Benissuera and Sempere. With a Latin-cross plan and built of masonry, brick and tile, it displays a Baroque bell-gable with a bell and a dome topped with a small cupola over the crossing. The ceramic retable on the calvary gives 1906 as the year of construction, and the interior, covered with a barrel vault, preserves a canvas of the patron saint from the mid-18th century. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection status in the Region of Valencia).
