What to see and do in Benigànim

Benigànim
Village
Benigànim is a municipality of the Vall d'Albaida, in the south of the province of Valencia, with 5,759 inhabitants, where Josefa María de Santa Inés, the Beata Inés, was born in 1625 and died in 1696 at the convent of Discalced Augustinian nuns in the town; beatified in 1888, her feast on 21 January draws thousands of people. Its oldest quarter, the Illeta, with narrow, irregular streets, dates back to the 12th century, when the wazir Abu Mahomet Ben Gania founded a new settlement there which, after the Christian conquest, became organised around squares, fountains and churches. In 1602 Philip III granted it the title of royal town, which allowed it to become independent of Xàtiva. Its economy today rests on a diverse industry, dominated by wood, glass and textiles.
