What to see and do in Castellonet de la Conquesta

Castellonet de la Conquesta
Village
Castellonet de la Conquesta is the smallest municipality in the Safor, in the province of Valencia, at the western end of the Huerta de Gandía, among the foothills of the sierra de Ador. A former Morisco alquería of the duchy of Gandia, it was depopulated by the expulsion decree of 1609 and took more than a century to recover its inhabitants: in the early 18th century the village had barely ten or twelve houses. It was a hamlet of Palma de Gandía and originated around a small castle; in 1575 its owner, Valeriano Boix, sold it to Miguel Santafé, for which it also became known as Castellonet de Santafé, later passing to the Almunia family. At El Tossal, remains of an Iberian settlement have been found. In 2023 it suffered a serious fire that forced the evacuation of 850 people. It has 159 inhabitants.

Historical milestone
The expulsion decree of 1609 emptied the Morisco hamlets of the duchy of Gandia, among them Castellonet, which was left depopulated. The charters of new settlement shared out houses and lands among Christian colonists and the comarca took more than a century to recover its inhabitants.
