Ador
Village
Ador is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, on the boundary between the Serpis valley and the Sierra de Ador; its name comes from the Arabic ad-dūr, the houses. It was repopulated by Christians in 1248 after the conquest of Jaume I, and in 1276 Peter the Great granted Joan de Pròxita lordship over its castle; it later passed to the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba and, from 1460, to the Tolsà and Montcada families. It has 1,755 inhabitants. It retains the parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, enlarged in the 18th century, and the chapel of Saint Joseph, an asset of local relevance. It holds Moors and Christians festivities on the first weekend of August, followed by the patron saint festivities from the third Sunday of the month.
