What to see and do in Almiserà

Almiserà
Village
Almiserà is one of the smallest municipalities of La Safor, in Valencia, in the valley of the Vernissa river and at the foot of the Sierra del Buixcarró, with 278 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Arabic al-miṣrād, the wasteland, and it originated as an Andalusi alquería dependent on Borro castle, of which only scant remains survive today; before the Morisco expulsion of 1609 it had 26 families, and was repopulated shortly after under the Duchy of Gandia. Irrigated land, devoted mainly to oranges, coexists with rain-fed olives, almonds, carobs, vines and cereals. Its parish church is dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, and the municipal area retains the Barrina water mill, in use until the mid-20th century, in 1958, with its pond and machinery still in good condition.
