What to see and do in Ròtova

Ròtova
Village
Ròtova is a small municipality of the Safor, in the province of Valencia, situated on the plain irrigated by the Vernisa river, which waters the area's orange groves, while to the northwest the land rises to the cerro del Agua, at 590 metres. Its name comes from the Arabic rutba, 'place for collecting taxes on livestock'. The village's history has been linked to that of the nearby monastery of Saint Jerome of Cotalba: in the early 15th century its lord, Joan de Fluvià, agreed with the monks on the use of the Vernisa's waters to improve the irrigation channel shared with neighbouring Alfahuir, and since 1546 it has been governed by the settlement charter of Pere de Figuerola. In its territory prehistoric remains have been found, such as the cave of les Rates Penades, and a Roman tombstone now in the Archaeological Museum of Gandia.
Surroundings of the Sierra Grossa and the Mondúver in Ròtova
Nature
Ròtova lies between the foothills of the Sierra Grossa and at the foot of the Mondúver massif, in a privileged natural setting in the La Safor comarca, in the south of the province of Valencia. Its relief combines an alluvial plain formed by the deposits of the Vernisa river with heights such as cerro del Agua (590 m), Alto de las Águilas (581 m) and Alto de la Fuente Blanca (557 m). Between the latter two rises the Fuente dels Llibrells, the source of the Garrofers ravine, while the Daya ravine joins the Alfahuir ravine shortly before flowing into the Vernisa. The climate is Mediterranean, and barely a kilometre from the town stands the monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba.
