What to see and do in Burjassot

Burjassot
Village
Burjassot is a municipality of L'Horta Nord, in the province of Valencia, in the metropolitan area of the city, with 39,702 inhabitants and known for its old underground grain silos. Its name comes from the Arabic burǧ as-sud, “tower of the weir,” and it originated as a fortified Andalusi hamlet; the first mention dates from after the conquest of Valencia by James I, when in 1237 it was granted to García Pérez de Figuerola, and in 1389 the jurist Micer Doménech Mascó transformed its castle into a residential palace. It was the setting in 1522 for one of the most notable episodes of the Germanías revolt: there died, after taking refuge when his revolt failed, the mysterious leader known as l'Encobert.
The Silos of Burjassot
Monument
An old underground grain store in Burjassot, formed by a group of silos hewn into the rock, in what is known as the Patio de los Silos. It was built from the 16th century onwards to store surplus wheat from the city of Valencia, and the works were not considered finished until 1806. The complex consists of 47 underground storage pits, of which 41 still retain their cover.
Festivities of Burjassot
Activity
Burjassot's patronal festival is in honour of Sant Roc, on 16 August, with the traditional Roda de Sant Roc; on 30 September the patron saint, the Virgen de la Cabeza, is also celebrated.
The construction of the Patio de los Silos
Historical milestone
The city of Valencia began digging here the underground stores where it kept its wheat reserve against bad harvests; new ones continued to be opened until 1806 and there came to be forty-seven, of which forty-one are preserved today. They were built experimentally in 1573, under the stonemason Sancho de Camino, on a limestone hillock near Burjassot whose composition allowed the grain to be well preserved. The complex was officially inaugurated in 1806, under Charles IV, already equipped with storerooms, a well and a paved terrace. Its hemispherical stone lids, called pilós, are arranged over a courtyard with a trapezoidal perimeter of about seventy-five metres on a side. The silos were abandoned in 1931 and today are a hallmark of Burjassot's identity.
The Pla del Pou skirmish
Historical milestone
A Carlist band surprised in 1837 within the municipality a liberal column during the First Carlist War; thirty-seven captured soldiers were shot, in one of the harshest episodes of the war in the huerta (irrigated farmland).

Food and drink
Oranges, artichokes and seasonal vegetables grew for centuries in the huerta that surrounded the town, the same one that filled with wheat the silos where Valencia kept its grain reserve.
