What to see and do in Meliana

Meliana
Village
Meliana is a municipality of the Valencian L'Horta Nord, with flat terrain, whose name comes from the Andalusi «Miliana»; it was conquered by James I in 1238 and today has more than 11,000 inhabitants. In 1646 it had barely 90 houses and about 450 inhabitants, a figure that had grown to about 1,000 by 1794. In 1862 the industrialist Miquel Nolla installed a ceramic mosaic factory with technique imported from England, whose pavements reached palaces and stations across half of Europe. Its market gardens, irrigated by the Royal Ditch of Moncada, produce vegetables such as winter artichokes, potatoes, onions and tomatoes, as well as tiger nuts for horchata; today, however, industrial activity outweighs agricultural activity.
Nolla Palace of Meliana
Monument
A mansion built in the late 19th century in Meliana, in the L'Horta Nord comarca, as the residence of Miguel Nolla Bruixet, director of the Azulejos Nolla tile factory, and also known as Villa Ivonne or Palauet de Noia. After being inhabited by a French family, it was turned into a warehouse when the factory closed and was replaced by another facility, until it finally became the property of Meliana Town Council, and today is one of the municipality's most notable buildings.
The Valencian barraca
Curiosity
The barraca was the traditional, distinctive home of the farmers of the Valencian huerta, a vernacular form of building adapted to the farming needs of its occupants.
Festivities of Meliana
Activity
Meliana's local festivities are on the 28th of April, San Vicente Ferrer, and the 12th of September, Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, the patron saint to whom the main festivities are dedicated, starting on the first Friday of that month.
The Nolla mosaic factory
Historical milestone
Miguel Nolla Bruixet installed in 1862 in the village a ceramic mosaic factory with a technique brought from England; its floors carpeted palaces and stations across half of Europe and created a workers' colony of its own.
The artichokes of the Meliana market gardens
Food and drink
The artichoke shares the terraces watered by the Acequia Real de Moncada with potato, onion, tomato and watermelon; it is the winter crop that supplies the comarca's markets.
