What to see and do in Canet d'En Berenguer

Canet d'En Berenguer
Village
Canet de Berenguer is a coastal municipality in the comarca of Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, located next to the mouth of the Palancia river. Its name comes from the Latin cannetum, “reed bed,” and from the surname of Francisco Berenguer, lord of the place in the 15th century. After the Reconquest by James I it passed through several hands until reaching the Berenguer family; in the 16th century it was a walled town of 45 houses with a company of coastal horsemen, and in 1797 it had one hundred residents engaged in silk, oil and dryland cereal farming, according to the botanist Cavanilles. Today it has 8,297 inhabitants. It preserves an 18th-century Baroque parish church and, on an old 16th-century watchtower, a lighthouse from 1904, 30 metres tall with 140 steps, built 300 metres from the sea.

Lighthouse-Tower of Canet d'En Berenguer
Curiosity
The lighthouse of Canet d'En Berenguer was installed in 1904 on a sandy spit that forms Cape Canet, at the mouth of the river Palancia. It is 30 metres tall, has 140 steps and an octagonal base, with a white light that reaches a range of 25 miles. Its most distinctive feature is that it stands about 300 metres inland, among orange groves, on the site of an old 16th-century watchtower that gave warning of the arrival of corsair ships: at that time the place was walled and housed one of the five companies of horsemen that guarded the coast.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Canet d'En Berenguer
Monument
Baroque parish church in Canet d'En Berenguer (Valencia), built in the 18th century, between 1747 and 1762, though its origin would be older: the church already existed in 1420, according to the will of Francesc Berenguer, first Baron of Canet, who expressed his wish to be buried inside it. Its salmon-coloured façade is arranged in three sections with a doorway of Doric pilasters and a niche holding the image of Saint Peter; the interior has a single nave with side chapels and preserves, in the chapel of the Virgin Against Fevers, an altarpiece in Byzantine style possibly the work of a 16th-century Italian workshop. A fire in 1936 destroyed the rest of the images and furnishings. Listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a heritage-protection status of local scope) in 1998.
