What to see and do in Benavites

Benavites
Village
Benavites is a municipality in the comarca of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, 39 km from the capital, with 652 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its parish church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, was established in 1299 and rebuilt in the 18th century; it preserves sgraffito decoration painted between 1584 and 1592 with griffins, chimeras and scenes from the life of the Virgin. Next to what was the palace of the Marquis of Bélgida stands the Tower of Benavites, square in plan, from the 13th or 14th centuries, 25 metres high, with embedded Roman and Hebrew tombstones, and listed as a monumento nacional (Spain's former national heritage designation, precursor to today's BIC). The patron saint festivities, in honour of Our Lady of the Angels and Saint Paul, begin on the last Saturday of June and are organised by the clavarios, 22-year-old young men of the village.
Manorial tower of Benavites
Monument
Tower of Benavites, a testimony to the municipality's seigneurial past, in a landscape of orange groves and towers of Islamic origin. It is a quadrangular tower from the 13th or 14th century, about 25 metres high, located next to what was the palace of the marquis of Bélgida. Several Roman and Hebrew tombstones are preserved in it, and it is listed as a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation). The counts of Almenara and Cocentaina ordered the construction of the so-called Torre de la Señoría in the 15th century, when Benavites once again became a lordship.
