What to see and do in Quartell

Quartell
Village
Quartell is a municipality of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, with 1,640 inhabitants, in the centre of the Vall de Segó, between the Espadán and Calderona mountain ranges. In Roman times it was possibly the country estate of a patrician from Saguntum, and after the conquest by James I it is documented as Quarcel, when it was a hamlet irrigated by Roman hydraulic works. The town belonged to the Crown and to several noble families until Francisco Muñoz acquired it in 1383. Its inhabitants, Mudéjars until the forced baptism of 1525, later became Moriscos and were expelled by Philip III in 1609, the year the village was resettled under a settlement charter. It preserves a Baroque parish church from the 17th century with a canvas attributed to the school of Juan de Juanes.
New Mill of Quartell
Monument
The Molí Nou, also called de la Font, is a rice and flour mill located on the Camí de la Font, in the partida de la Font of Quartell, in the comarca of Camp de Morvedre, and included in the Generalitat Valenciana's catalogue of Bienes Inmuebles de Etnología (heritage-listed ethnological assets). It dates from 1741, when it was built under the name Molí Nou, Doblons or Molí de Diego, the surname of its last millers; when it was restored in 2001 it took the name Molino Nuevo. It is a water-powered mill fed by the waters of the acequia del Mig, and its system of sluice gates regulates the distribution of water for irrigating Quartell, Llogarets and Faura. It remained in operation until the mid-20th century; after years of disuse, the town council bought and restored it in 2000 to house the Museo del Agua, an information center for the local Water Routes.
Festivities of Quartell
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Quartell in honor of the Guardian Angel and Saint Anne, held in the second half of July with processions, concerts and fireworks. Its most distinctive event is the Plantà del Pí, on the first Friday of the festival, in which the village's young people plant a pine tree in the main square.
Parish Church of Santa Ana of Quartell
Monument
17th-century church in the Valencian Baroque style with a nave covered by a barrel vault, preserving frescoes and a canvas attributed to the school of Juan de Juanes.
Palace of Quartell
Monument
The Palacio de Quartell, the former palace of the counts of Faura, was built in 1741 in the Plaza del Palacio, in the town's old quarter. It follows the layout of Valencian Gothic palaces, arranged around a central courtyard. The main door, made of stone, had an opening wide enough for carriages to pass through, above which stood the main floor; on the upper floor, the loft, the harvest was kept and silk was stored, while service rooms, stables and access to the orchard were arranged around the courtyard. It is now privately owned by the heirs of the counts of Faura, and the town council has considered expropriating it to turn it into a hotel. Together with the church and the public washhouse, it forms the town's heritage complex.
The settlement charter of Quartell
Historical milestone
The lords of the place signed with new colonists the settlement charter in 1609, the same year as the expulsion of the Moriscos, which had left the village almost empty, in order to bring the irrigated fields and the marshland back into cultivation.
The tortà and coca of Quartell
Food and drink
Homemade sweets baked for the village festivities, of a simple dough of flour, oil and sugar; they accompany a cooking of Valencian paella and stews of meat and vegetables from the huerta.
The melons and pumpkins of the marjal wetlands
Food and drink
The damp lands of the marjal, won from the coastal wetland, give seasonal melons, tomatoes and pumpkins that have supplied the comarca's markets for generations and that still mark the calendar of the village's huerta.
