What to see and do in Petrés

Petrés
Village
Petrés, in El Camp de Morvedre (Valencia), has 1,124 inhabitants (2025) in the lower valley of the Palancia river, surrounded by orchards irrigated by Arab channels later expanded by the Romans. It was a hamlet of Morvedre (Sagunto) until the 14th century; in 1340 Peter IV granted the place to Francesc Aguiló, and in 1410 Martin I confirmed possession to Joan Aguiló Romeu, on whom he bestowed the title of baron of Petrés. Its Muslim population remained until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. The village is dominated by a fortified palace with a square floor plan, built in the 14th century by that first baron over the remains of an Arab structure and declared a monumento histórico-artístico (a heritage protection designation, precursor to today's BIC) in 1983; also remaining are the manorial olive press, the old oven, l'Hort Tancat and several Islamic cisterns.
Cultural route of the Islamic cisterns of Petrés
Monument
A route through Petrés that reveals old Islamic cisterns, oil mills and other historic sites in the municipality. Among the cisterns, the Pou, l'Aixeta and l'Aljub stand out: l'Aixeta is a medieval cistern now converted into an exhibition hall with an ethnological museum, and the Pou, opposite the castle, formerly supplied the palace and was rebuilt in 1803 with two fountains and a monumental staircase. The route also passes old mills powered by the Acequia Mayor of Sagunto, such as the Molino Moret, from the 13th century, and the Molino Malany, from the 14th, which belonged to the royal family until the 18th century.
Castle of Petrés
Monument
The castle of Petrés, or castle-house of the Baron of Petrés, dominates the road to Sagunto from a hillock. It is a distinctive fortified palace, square in plan, built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, after the Reconquest of the Campo de Murviedro by James I, by order of Joan Aguiló Romeu, to whom Peter the Ceremonious granted the title of first Baron of Petrés in 1340, on the remains of an Arab structure. It follows the scheme of the Valencian Gothic palace-fortress, with the defensive function already relaxed in favour of the residential one: it is entered through a round arch leading to a courtyard with a staircase and an underground cistern. After the Aguiló lineage died out in the late 16th century and a long period of abandonment, it fell into ruin; it has been under restoration since 2016. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1983.
Olive Press and Old Oven of Petrés
Curiosity
The remains of the manorial oil mill, the old bread oven and l'Hort Tancat, a walled orchard with a gate of large voussoirs, traces of the feudal society that depended on the castle of Petrés.
The barony of Petrés
Historical milestone
Martin the Humane confirmed the place to Joan Aguiló Romeu and granted him the title of baron of Petrés; Peter IV had donated it to the same family in 1340, and it kept a Muslim population until the expulsion of 1609.
The Monastrell wine of Morvedre
Food and drink
Monastrell, known in the past as the Murviedro grape, was for centuries the basis of the red wines of these lands; the village came to have a winery of its own beside its medieval oil mills.
