What to see and do in Faura

Faura
Village
Faura is a municipality in El Camp de Morvedre, in the sub-comarca known as Les Valls, with flat terrain except in its southwestern sector, covered with orange groves, and conurbated with Benifairó de les Valls, with which it was even merged between 1884 and 1906 as Villa de la Unión. Its population comes from the gradual merging of old Muslim hamlets known as Els Llogarets de Segó, with a mixed presence of Moriscos and Christians until the expulsion of 1609. In 1473 John II established a lordship there for Pere Ramón de Monsoriu, which passed at the end of the 16th century to the Villarrasa family and then to the Vives de Canyamars, raised to a county by Philip IV in 1647 and remaining so until the abolition of lordships in 1814.
Festivities of Faura
Activity
Faura's patronal festival is in the second week of August in honour of the Assumption and Santa Bárbara, with the image brought down from the hermitage; on the first Sunday of December a fair of medieval origin is also held.
Church of los Santos Juanes de Faura
Monument
The church of los Santos Juanes in Faura was built in the 16th century and rebuilt between 1760 and 1790, although the original bell tower remained standing and is preserved intact, never having been replaced. Behind the church, remains of the medieval town wall are preserved, protected under the Generic Declaration of the Decree of 22 April 1949 and under Spanish Historical Heritage Law 16/1985. It is one of the main historic churches in Faura.
Hermitage of Santa Bárbara de Faura
Monument
18th-century chapel reached via a Way of the Cross or calvary, located on the outskirts of the town of Faura. It was built in 1716 and had a hermit living there from 1718; its altar preserves an image of Saint Barbara.
Count's House (El Palau) of Faura
Monument
Former Islamic fortress in Faura (Valencia), adjoining the Muslim town wall, which was converted in the 15th century into a manor house without entirely losing its defensive appearance, although it ended up losing most of its fortified features. It was originally Gothic in style, though today it is mostly Renaissance. Its façade bears the coat of arms of the Vilarrasa family, and the building, popularly known as El Palau, has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949, a protection later ratified by Law 16/1985.
The creation of the lordship of Faura
Historical milestone
John II constituted the lordship and granted it to Pere Ramón de Monsoriu; the family kept it until the end of the sixteenth century, when it passed to Juan de Villarrasa and afterwards to the Vives de Canyamars.
The county of Faura
Historical milestone
Philip IV raised the lordship to a county, a title that fell to the Vives de Canyamars family and that was maintained until the abolition of the jurisdictional lordships in 1814, already in the nineteenth century.
