What to see and do in Alfara de la Baronia

Alfara de la Baronia
Village
Alfara de la Baronía is a municipality of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, in the valley of the Palancia river, which divides it into two halves, with the urban centre remaining on the right side. The area was already populated in Iberian times and, in Roman times, belonged to the Ager Saguntinus; after the conquest by James I, in 1233, the Muslim hamlet of Alfara passed to the Barony of Torres Torres, a lordship that passed through several houses. In 1609 it was left unpopulated by the expulsion of the Moriscos and received a new settlement charter in 1611. Until 2010, following a local referendum, it was called Alfara de Algimia; the current name recalls that historical connection. It preserves a church from 1564 dedicated to Saint Augustine, an 18th-century cistern with a washing place next to the Palancia, and the hermitage of the Virgin of los Afligidos, from 1699.
Parish Church of San Agustín of Alfara de la Baronia
Monument
Parish church of Alfara de la Baronia dedicated to Saint Augustine, founded in 1564, located on the plaza de la Iglesia and listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation). In 1799 the church was enlarged with the construction of the transept, the dome and the chapel of the Communion, work commissioned to the architect Cristóbal Bueso, who also redecorated the interior in the Ionic style. Inside it preserves works by the painter Joaquín Oliet Cruella, including a glorification of Saint Augustine, a communion of the Virgin, an Agony in the Garden and several paintings of saints.
Hermitage of la Virgen de los Afligidos de Alfara de la Baronia
Monument
The chapel of the Virgen de los Afligidos crowns the Muntanyeta de l'Ermita, the roughly 229-metre hill that overlooks Alfara de la Baronia and offers the best views of the town. The building, rectangular in plan and built of rubble masonry, was completed in 1699 and preserves a simple façade topped by a curved pediment with a bell-gable, as well as an attached hermit's dwelling. Inside, covered by a barrel vault and lit by lunettes, with simple Doric decoration and four side chapels, a carving of the patron saint from the late 17th century is venerated. On 8 September, the feast day of the town's patron saint, the image is carried to the parish church, where it remains for eight days.

The name change of Alfara de la Baronia
Historical milestone
After a local consultation held the previous year, the municipality ceased in 2010 to be called Alfara de Algimia and adopted the name that recalls its historic belonging to the barony of Torres Torres.
