What to see and do in Algímia d'Alfara

Algímia d'Alfara
Village
Algímia d'Alfara is one of the smallest municipalities of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, with 1,115 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated between the Sierra de Espadán and the Sierra Calderona, in the lower valley of the Palancia river. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ǧāmiʿ, “the congregational mosque,” and its urban centre was formed in Andalusi times; after the Christian conquest it was populated by Moriscos until their expulsion in 1609, and the population did not recover until the 18th century. With paths running past springs, irrigation channels and traditional pools, its church was built in the last third of the 16th century on top of a former mosque and preserves a painting by José Camarón and a sculpture by Antón Vicente, the only work by this artist in Valencian lands.

Church of San Vicente Ferrer de Algímia d'Alfara
Monument
The church of San Vicente Ferrer, built in the 16th century, was raised on an old mosque converted into a church, which until 1574 was an annex of the parish of Torres Torres. It suffered severe damage during the civil war, after which it was rebuilt largely respecting its traditional layout: a flat façade with a simple lintelled doorway and an exposed-brick bell tower topped by a small dome of glazed tiles. Inside, with a Latin-cross plan, the nave is covered by a barrel vault in five Pompeian-style bays, and the main altarpiece, a modern work, is presided over by the image of San Vicente Ferrer, the church's patron. It also preserves a painting by José Camarón and a sculpture by Antón Vicente, the only work by this artist in Valencian lands.
