What to see and do in Alfondeguilla

Alfondeguilla
Village
Alfondeguilla is a municipality of La Plana Baixa, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Espadán, at 211 metres above sea level, with part of its municipal area within the natural park of the same name. The earliest settlements were Roman, but the present site was created by the Arabs; after the conquest it belonged to the counts of Ripalda and to the Duchy of Medinaceli. As a place inhabited by Moriscos, its population was halved after their expulsion between 1602 and 1646, although it grew markedly during the 19th century, rising from 180 inhabitants in 1795 to 943 in 1900. During the Civil War it was the last stronghold of the Ebro Front where the Republican Army gave way to the Nationalists. It retains the Pont de l'Aigua, a Roman bridge rebuilt by the Arabs, with six large arches over the ravine.
Church of San Bartolomé de Alfondeguilla
Monument
The parish church of San Bartolomé in Alfondeguilla, an 18th-century temple in the province of Castellón, is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a heritage-protection status for locally significant assets), with identification code 12.06.007-003, under Law 5/2007 of the Generalitat Valenciana. It is a simple temple with a single-nave plan and small dimensions, with side chapels linked to one another; among them stand out the baptismal chapel and the communion chapel, covered by a sail vault. Its façade, also simple, has a bell tower on one side and a single entrance door above which an oculus opens, letting in little light inside, except in the area of the high choir located just behind it. It stands on the main square of the municipality.

Nature
Gateway to the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park from Alfondeguilla, one of the 19 municipalities that make up this protected area since 29 September 1998 and which covers 31,180 hectares. On the reddish sandstones of the Buntsandstein grows the largest cork-oak grove (Quercus suber) in the Comunitat Valenciana, together with stands of Pinus pinaster, formations that give this side of the mountains its forested character.
