What to see and do in La Vilavella

La Vilavella
Village
La Vilavella, known in Spanish as Villavieja, is a municipality in the comarca of La Plana Baixa, at the foot of the Sierra de Espadán and surrounded by the municipal area of Nules, with about 3,050 inhabitants. It was the founding nucleus of present-day Nules: its origins go back to a Muslim castle that brought together the scattered inhabitants of the area and which surrendered to King James I in the spring of 1238. Head of a barony granted in 1251 to Guillem de Montcada, it remained as Vilavella when, in the 14th century, the new settlement of Nules was founded next to the old castle. Its Morisco population remained until the expulsion of 1609, and two years later Cristóbal de Centelles repopulated it with 29 families. Its thermal waters, valued since Roman times, supply the spa built in the 19th century.

Nature
The hot springs of La Vilavella, known as the Fuente Calda, emerge at a temperature of 27 °C, and their medicinal properties were already known to the Romans. In the early 19th century the municipality came to have eleven spas exploiting these waters, and today it still maintains an active spa that continues to make use of the curative properties of the subsoil.
