What to see and do in La Vall d'Uixó

La Vall d'Uixó
Village
La Vall d'Uixó is a municipality in the comarca of La Plana Baixa, inland in the province of Castellón though only eight kilometres from the beaches of the Costa del Azahar, with 32,242 inhabitants (INE 2025). The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, especially around the spring of Sant Josep, today the site of the underground river of Sant Josep that gives rise to the Coves de Sant Josep. The earliest mentions of the place appear in Arabic texts, which cite it as Shûn, and the earliest Christian references appear in the Llibre dels feits, with the account of the surrender of the Saracens to James I in 1238. The municipality also preserves Neolithic, Roman and Arab remains, and is surrounded by mountains such as the Penya Migdia and the Penyalba, both over 600 metres high.

Festivities of la Vall d'Uixó
Activity
La Vall d'Uixó celebrates its patron saint festivities of Saint Vincent Ferrer in April, around the second Monday after Easter, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Estatal (festival of national tourist interest) in 2003 and documented since at least 1775; they include bous al carrer (bulls running through the streets), religious events and an agricultural, commercial and vehicle fair that draws more than 115,000 visitors from across the Valencian Community every year. The programme opens on Easter Sunday with a mascletà and, over the following days, the vesprades de vaques in the Plaza dels Xorros, the singing of albadas and popular dinners of caldereta made with bull meat follow one another. In addition, in October, La Vall d'Uixó celebrates the festivities of the Sagrada Família and the Santíssim Crist, with a medieval market; both festivities are declared of national tourist interest.
Parish church of el Santo Ángel de La Vall d'Uixó
Monument
The Church of the Holy Guardian Angel, in Baroque style with Neoclassical decoration, is a Catholic church in the centre of La Vall d'Uixó (Plana Baixa, Castellón), in the area known as the poble de Dalt, and the seat of a parish of the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón. On 14 July 1981 the Dirección General de Bellas Artes, Archivos y Bibliotecas of the Ministry of Culture opened proceedings to declare it a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former heritage protection designation, forerunner of the Bien de Interés Cultural), a declaration formalised as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), in the category of monument, by decree 169/2007 of the Consell.
Parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de La Vall d'Uixó
Monument
The parish, established by papal bull in 1602, is one of the two main parishes of La Vall d'Uixó, together with that of the Holy Guardian Angel. The church, dating from the 17th and 19th centuries, was built in three stages, from 1636 to the current Neoclassical retable façade, completed in 1926; the Baroque bell tower, considered one of the most important in the Plana Baixa for changing from a square to an octagonal plan, was finished in 1791 to designs by Jacinto Agustí and restored in 1991. The main altarpiece, begun in 1833 to designs by Salvador Nonmedeu, was unveiled in 1870. Inside, notable features include the fresco paintings on the vaults, the Sagrario chapel with 18th-century Valencian tilework, and a 17th-century baptismal font recovered in 1994. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation).
