The sack of Torreblanca Historical milestone · Torreblanca, La Plana Alta, Castellón Image of Torreblanca, not of the place itself. On 24 August 1397, four galleys of Berber pirates from Bejaia, which had earlier passed through the Balearic Islands and the Columbretes, raided Torreblanca and carried off the monstrance with the consecrated hosts and 108 captives. The offence unleashed the so-called Armada Santa: King Martin the Humane and the Avignon pope Benedict XIII, the Aragonese Papa Luna, backed with a crusade bull an expedition that gathered in Ibiza seventy ships and seven thousand five hundred crusaders. The fleet set sail in August 1398 and sacked the North African city of Tedelis, where a thousand inhabitants died and another three hundred were taken prisoner; the king later negotiated the recovery of the monstrance in exchange for the release of part of those captives. 24 de agosto de 1397 Photo: Columbusalbus (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Torreblanca
