What to see and do in Vilar de Canes

Vilar de Canes
Village
Vilar de Canes is a municipality of L'Alt Maestrat, in Castellón, with 156 inhabitants (INE 2025). On Mount Machorral there remain the ruins of an Arab castle; after being freed from Saracen rule by the forces of Jaime I, it formed part of the Tenencia de Culla, and received a charter of settlement in 1316. It preserves the 18th-century church dedicated to the Purification of the Virgin, an old olive-oil mill and a municipality dotted with centuries-old farmhouses, among them the Mas de la Segarra, from the 16th century, declared a Historic Enclave. In 1938 it was one of the four demilitarised villages of the comarca on which the German air force tested dive-bombing, with more than forty residents killed.
