What to see and do in Càlig

Càlig
Village
Càlig is a municipality of 2,042 inhabitants (INE 2025) in El Baix Maestrat, in Castellón, on a hill 123 metres high beside the río Seco or rambla de Cervera. It was part of the territory of the castle of Cervera, under the lordship of the Order of the Hospital between 1234 and 1319 and later that of Montesa until the 19th century; it was resettled by Christians on 12 July 1234 and became an independent town on 11 January 1540. In 1649 it was sacked during the Reapers' War. It preserves a historic tower and, a kilometre from the town centre, the 18th-century baroque hermitage of the Virgen del Socorro; in the ravine that separates it from Vinaròs a flora micro-reserve was declared in 2003, and at its festivals les farinoses are prepared, a sweet made of flour, oil and sugar.
Tower of Càlig
Monument
Old watchtower located right in the centre of Càlig, on Calle Mayor, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It dates from the 13th century and already in medieval times stood near the church, at the centre of the town. On its front façade it bears a stone coat of arms with the date 1625, the year in which it is believed to have undergone deep renovation, when the façade was decorated and the coat of arms and other motifs were added in the interior rooms. Rectangular in plan and solidly built in masonry with ashlar at the corners and openings, it has three floors, the first covered by a barrel vault, the second with a wooden roof and the third converted into a terrace. It has served as town hall, prison and warehouse, and is today a cultural centre.
Festivities of San Lorenzo de Càlig
Activity
Càlig's patronal festivities in honor of San Lorenzo, on the 10th of August, during which les farinoses are prepared, a homemade sweet made of flour, oil and sugar; the village also preserves the 18th-century Baroque Ermita de la Virgen del Socorro.
Ravine of Aigua Oliva of Càlig
Nature
A 1.5-hectare flora micro-reserve declared in 2003 in the ravine that marks the boundary between Càlig and Vinaròs, with 109 species of vascular flora, among them holm oaks and rare endemic species of the Maestrat.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Socorro de Càlig
Monument
Hermitage located a kilometre from Càlig, wrapped in a dense wooded setting. The first written reference to the invocation of the Virgen del Socorro dates from 1582, although of that first hermitage only a part survives, now built into the site's bar; the present sanctuary, in neoclassical style with pilasters topped by decorative ornaments, was raised in the last third of the 18th century. Inside it preserves frescoes of great colouristic beauty painted by J. Oliet in 1826. The site also has lodgings, wells and recreation areas. It is, according to its residents, the most beloved and emblematic place in Càlig.
The farinoses of Càlig
Food and drink
A homemade sweet of flour, oil and sugar characteristic of the village festivities, which shares the table with sweet potato pastissets and the cocas of San Antonio; among the savory dishes the cardoon olla and the snail suquet stand out.
