Hermitage of San José de La Salzadella Monument · La Salzadella, El Baix Maestrat, Castellón Image of La Salzadella, not of the place itself. The hermitage of San José stands at 635 metres, at the highest point of the sierra that gives it its name, above La Salzadella (Castellón) and almost on the boundary with Santa Magdalena de Polpis. Documented since the 14th century, it was first dedicated to San Cristóbal until 1670, when it was rededicated to San José, possibly owing to the presence of Franciscans in the area. It suffered severe damage in the civil war, with only the image of the saint being saved, having been hidden in a cave, and it was restored in 1921. It is a simple building, rectangular in plan, with walls of whitewashed rubble masonry and a gabled roof, with a single-bell metal espadaña. Local residents climb up to it in pilgrimage on Easter Monday, a tradition organised since 1738, with a solemn mass, the singing of gozos, a meal, music and dancing.
