Matet
Village
Matet is a municipality in the interior of the Alto Palancia comarca (Castellón), with 94 inhabitants (INE 2025), clustered on the rocky slope of El Pilón, on the north-western foothills of the sierra de Espadán. Of Andalusi origin, between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, it was taken from Zayd Abu Zayd by James I in 1238 and given to the bishop of Barcelona; it later passed through the lordships of Sessa, Segorbe and Cardona until it was sold in 1581 to Dionisio de Reus, who ceded it to the counts of Aranda, who granted the founding charter in 1582. It preserves the cylindrical defensive tower of Muslim times that gives the hill its name, declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), as well as the church of San Juan Bautista and the hermitage of Santa Bárbara.
