What to see and do in Ayódar

Ayódar
Village
Ayódar is a municipality of the Alto Mijares, in Castellón, on the foothills of the Sierra de Espadán, within whose natural park it lies, on the slope of the Peña Saganta and on the banks of the rambla de Ayódar or río Chico, which separates the range from the río Mijares. Its origin is Muslim: it belonged to Zayd Abu Zayd, the last Almohad governor of Valencia, who retired here after making a pact with James I; once he converted to Christianity, the Muslim population rose up in 1235 and, after the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609, it was repopulated in 1611 by ten Christian families under the baron's settlement charter. It was the head of a barony together with Fuentes de Ayódar, Torralba del Pinar, Villamalur and Higueras. Its municipal area, mountainous and covered with pine forests, holds the hermitage of San Roque, a hiking landmark.
Festivities of Ayódar
Activity
Ayódar holds two local feasts a year. That of San Sebastián, on 20 January, is moved to the weekend closest to the date and brings together various popular events. That of the Virgen del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), around 2 October, runs through the week of the first Sunday of the month, with concerts, street parades, open-air dances, religious ceremonies, contests and bullfighting events. Both preserve the festive character of this municipality of the Castellón Alto Mijares, resettled after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609.
