What to see and do in Espadilla

Espadilla
Village
Espadilla is one of the smallest municipalities of El Alto Mijares, in Castellón, set on hillsides at the foot of the río Mijares, whose waters irrigate its orchards. It has 101 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is Spanish-speaking. Of Arab origin, it was given by the converted king Zayd Abu Zayd to the archbishop of Tarragona; after the conquest it belonged to the barony of Arenoso and, from 1355, to the ducal house of Gandía. It was a morisco settlement, with 85 houses in 1609. Its agriculture, today partly abandoned on the dry-farming terraces, is complemented by irrigated citrus; some of its residents work in the ceramics industry of Onda and Ribesalbes. Its religious buildings are limited to two hermitages, San Roque and the Calvario, besides the church of San Juan Bautista, from the 18th century, and the Casa Abadía, from the 17th century.
