What to see and do in Vallat

Vallat
Village
Vallat is one of the smallest municipalities of the comarca of El Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, with its town centre next to the bed of the río Mijares, at 276 metres above sea level and surrounded by forests of pine and holm oak. Of Muslim origin, it formed part of the lordship of Zayd Abu Zayd after the reconquest by James I in 1231 and later of the Barony of Arenós; ruins remain of the palace of the duke of Villahermosa, lord of the place from 1465. The expulsion of the moriscos in 1609 plunged the village into decline, and in the 1960s the construction of a hydroelectric power station brought a brief demographic upturn. It now has 66 inhabitants, who chiefly grow orange trees along the river.
