What to see and do in Ribesalbes

Ribesalbes
Village
Ribesalbes is a municipality in La Plana Baixa, in the province of Castellón, with a pottery-making tradition, with 1191 inhabitants, situated on a hillside that descends toward the bed of the Millars river, among pine and holm oak woods that cover most of its municipal area. Of Muslim origin, it was a hamlet of Onda until, following the Christian conquest of 1245, it was granted a settlement charter; in the 15th century it came under the dependency of the royal physician Domingo Ros de Orsins and later became a barony, a title held successively by several noble families until the 18th century, among them the Coll and Alcedo families. Its population, barely 40 households in 1565, grew strongly from the 19th century onward until surpassing a thousand inhabitants in 1910.
Aqueduct of el Barranco Martí
Monument
The aqueduct of the Barranco Martí, which spans this ravine in Ribesalbes (La Plana Baixa), is a 19th-century single-arch structure resting on two thick dry-masonry piers. It carried water from the Berita area to the market gardens that surrounded the town, a use now lost: it remains out of use, though it still stands as a testament to the traditional hydraulic engineering of the comarca.
