What to see and do in Sella

Sella
Village
Sella is a mountain municipality in La Marina Baixa, in Alicante, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Aitana, with 621 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its origin goes back to a 13th-century Muslim fortress, and it was an important Morisco settlement until the expulsion decreed by Philip III in 1609, which left the most prosperous village in the area depopulated; it was later repopulated with residents from Agres, Cocentaina, Guadalest and other nearby towns. It preserves the remains of that Arab fortress, on which stands the hermitage of Saint Barbara, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), reached by a Way of the Cross with stations in stone and tiles. A low-difficulty route runs from the village past springs, irrigation channels, mills and old dams beside the river's natural pools.
Castle and Tower of Sella
Monument
Sella Castle, known as the castle of Santa Bárbara, is of Islamic origin, from the 13th century, and its remains are preserved next to a hermitage dedicated to this saint, where festive processions are held in December; it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 March 2001. The tower, from the 16th century and later than the Reconquista, is part of the old Palacio del Barón and is joined to later buildings on the municipality's plaza Mayor; it received the same declaration on 20 January 1997. Both elements reflect the history of Sella, from a prosperous Muslim population to its resettlement in the 17th century.

Trail of el Agua de Sella
Nature
Easy walking route starting from the village of Sella that takes in the Font del Pi, the Font de l'Alcàntera, irrigation channels, mills and old dams beside natural pools on the River Sella.
Giraboix
Food and drink
Dish of desalted salt cod with potato, green beans, onion and cauliflower boiled separately and served with an allioli beaten in the mortar. The name alludes to the gesture of turning the pestle and it was fast-day food in the mountain towns.
