What to see and do in Finestrat

Finestrat
Village
Finestrat is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in Alicante, which forms a conurbation with Benidorm and has 9,919 inhabitants. Its historic centre lies inland, while its coastline, barely 267 metres long, is reduced to the Cala de Finestrat, obtained as a reward for its defence against Berber pirates, the origin of the watchtowers along the Alicante coast; hence the municipality's description of itself as “sea and mountain”. On its territory rises Puig Campana, the second-highest mountain in the province at 1,410 metres, whose gap at the summit legend attributes to a sword blow from the knight Roland, a fragment of which is said to have formed the Isla de Benidorm; another version attributes it to the giant Cerivert. Today it combines agriculture, services and tourism, with the Terra Mítica park in its municipal area.
Puig Campana
Nature
Puig Campana is a mountain of the Prebetic ranges located in the municipality of Finestrat (Alicante), 1410 metres high and the second-highest peak in the province. Separated from the Mediterranean by barely 7.8 kilometres in a straight line, it is the peak closest to the coast of the entire Iberian Peninsula, which, together with its distinctive profile, makes it visible from many points in the region. Its conical summit has two peaks separated by a great fissure known as El Portell, formed of Jurassic limestone rocks together with Cretaceous materials and, towards Finestrat, Triassic clays and gypsum. The wetter north face holds forests of maple, ash and strawberry tree, while on the sunny slope Aleppo pine and holm oak predominate. Included in the list of Sites of Community Importance since 1992, in 2006 it was declared a Protected Landscape together with the Ponotx.
Festivities of Finestrat
Activity
Finestrat's patronal festivities, in mid- and late August, honor Sant Bertomeu and the Santíssim Crist del Remei, with the main day set for the 24th of August.
Legend of the giant Cerivert
Curiosity
El Portell, the distinctive notch in the Puig Campana, gives rise to the legend of the giant Cerivert, who according to popular tradition opened the gap in the mountain.
Hermitage of el Santísimo Cristo del Remedio de Finestrat
Monument
Small hermitage at the top of the town of Finestrat, beside the remains of the old castle, with views along the coastline as far as the city of Alicante.
Legend of Roland's Cleft in the Puig Campana
Curiosity
Legend attributes the deep notch in the summit of the Puig Campana, a mountain in the municipal district of Finestrat, to a sword blow from the knight Roldán, the fallen fragment supposedly forming the Isla de Benidorm.
