What to see and do in Benifato

Benifato
Village
Benifato is a small municipality in the Marina Baixa, in the interior of the province of Alicante and in the Guadalest Valley, on the slope of the Sierra de Aitana. It originated as a Muslim alquería attached after the conquest to the lordship of Guadalest, which retained a Morisco population until the expulsion of 1609, which left the village depopulated; its recovery was slow and, after reaching 375 inhabitants in 1877, it fell again to 117 in 1991. It preserves old snow wells or clots for storing ice, evidence of a traditional activity of the region, and its only economic activity is dryland farming of olive, almond and loquat trees. Its patronal festivities, in honour of San Miguel, are held on the last weekend of August. It has 162 inhabitants (INE 2025).
