What to see and do in Confrides

Confrides
Village
Confrides is a mountain municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, with 293 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the settlements of Confrides and Abdet, high up in the Guadalest valley. On its territory rises the highest peak in the province, in the Sierra de Aitana (1,558 m), and the Aljofra castle, a Muslim fortress on the Penya del Castillo. After its conquest in 1264, James I gave the town to Vidal de Sarriá; in the early 16th century its Muslim population was forced to convert after the Revolt of the Germanies, and before their expulsion in 1609 these Moriscos put up strong resistance, taking refuge in the Valle de Alauar. In l'Abdet, next to the hermitage, one of the oldest Valencian pilota fronton courts in the Valencian Community is preserved.

After the Christian conquest of 1264 by James I of Aragon it was rebuilt and passed through the Sarrià, Cardona and Ariza families; it played a prominent role during the Morisco revolts prior to the expulsion of 1609. In a ruined state, it preserves sections of the outer wall, a square tower, a circular tower, a crenellated inner enclosure and an arched gateway.
