What to see and do in Relleu

Relleu
Village
Relleu is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the interior of the province of Alicante, with 1,375 inhabitants, nestled at the centre of a valley surrounded by mountains such as the Cabezón de Oro, at 1,209 metres, the Sierra de la Grana and the Sierra del Aguilar. Of Muslim origin, its inhabitants built the castle; after the conquest of the comarca by James I of Aragon, the lordship passed to Bernardo de Sarriá. It was a Morisco settlement, and after their expulsion only fifteen Old Christian families remained. The Relleu reservoir, an arch-vault dam built in the 18th century with the royal authorisation of Philip IV, is now crossed by a wooden walkway installed in 2022. The church of Santiago Apóstol (Saint James the Apostle), from the 17th century and rebuilt in 1931, preserves the oldest bells in the province.

Church of Santiago Apóstol de Relleu
Monument
The church of Santiago Apóstol of Relleu, in the Marina Baixa of Alicante, was built in the 17th century on the village's old cemetery. The building was demolished at the end of the 19th century and its reconstruction was not completed until 1931. It holds the oldest bells in the whole province of Alicante. Relleu, of Muslim origin, was conquered by James I of Aragon, and this church represents the Christian religious infrastructure built after the conquest.
