What to see and do in Orxeta

Orxeta
Village
Orxeta is a municipality in La Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, with 906 inhabitants (INE 2025), on the maritime side of the Valencian Prebaetic range, south of the Sierra de Aitana, between the Sierra de Orcheta and the Sierra de Relleu; there the Sella meets the Amadorio and forms the reservoir of the same name, next to Villajoyosa. After the conquest by James I, its lands passed to the Order of Santiago; the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 reduced the settlement from 150 to 45 houses. It preserves an 18th-century church next to the former palace of the Order of Santiago, in a town centre of narrow streets, and the remains of the Castellet dels Moros, a 12th-13th-century fortress next to the l'Arquet aqueduct; its municipal area, known together with Relleu for its traditional oil, narrows into a gorge next to the reservoir.
